UBC’s Brent Hayden swims to a bronze in London
VANCOUVER (CUP) — Former UBC swimmer Brent Hayden has won a bronze medal for the 100m freestyle in the 2012 Summer Olympics. His time of 47.80s was just 0.28s off the winner’s pace.

“It’s just amazing right now,” Hayden said to CTV after the race. “You always have that little bit of doubt in the back of your mind, but then something comes forward and you realize you have an equal shot just like everyone else, so you just go for it.”
Hayden missed the finals in the Beijing games in 2008, as well as the Athens games in 2004. He was not a favourite to make the podium in this year’s sprint, but managed to pull out his first Olympic medal.
“I couldn’t afford to hold anything back,” Hayden said. “With 25 metres left, it hurt, but I was saying to myself, ‘This could be the last 100m freestyle race of my career,’ so all I was doing was going for it.”
